The Sabarimala Temple is a Hindu temple in Kerala, India, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. The temple is located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, on a hilltop in the village of Ranni-Perunad, and is surrounded by 18 hills.
Location: The temple is located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, about 72 kilometers from Pathanamthitta town.
Pilgrim season: The temple is open to devotees during the pilgrim season, which is from November to mid-January. The main events of the pilgrim season are Mandala Pooja and Makaravilakku.
Other opening days: The temple is also open on the first five days of each Malayalam month.
Entry restrictions: In the past, women between the ages of 10 and 50 were not allowed to enter the temple. In 2018, the Supreme Court of India ruled that this prohibition was unconstitutional.
Temple architecture: The temple is built on a 40-foot high plateau, and the dome is covered in gold. The temple's sanctum sanctorum has a gold-plated roof and four golden finials.
Devotee rituals: To reach the temple, devotees must climb 18 sacred steps called the Pathinettu thripadikal.
